Blue Star Security Co-Founder Featured in Journal & Topics on Law Enforcement Mental Health Support

Law enforcement officers are regularly exposed to traumatic and high-stress incidents, and the cumulative impact of these experiences can significantly affect long-term mental health. While awareness of these challenges has increased, access to timely and effective support remains uneven across the profession.

In a recent Journal & Topics feature, Blue Star Security co-founder Anthony Varchetto discusses these issues from the perspective of a retired Chicago Police Officer and advocate for improved mental health access within law enforcement.

Mental Health Challenges and Access Gaps

The feature highlights how repeated exposure to critical incidents can build over time, creating emotional strain that is not always immediately visible. Although many departments have expanded wellness resources, officers still face delays in accessing care when it is most urgently needed.

Varchetto points out that mental health response in law enforcement often does not align with real-world urgency. Even short delays in care can be significant when an officer is in crisis, particularly given the nature of the profession.

Barriers to Seeking Support

A major issue discussed is the hesitation among officers to seek help internally due to concerns about stigma, confidentiality, or professional impact. These concerns are compounded by limited provider availability and scheduling delays.

This combination of cultural and structural barriers can result in officers postponing care longer than is safe or effective, reinforcing the need for more accessible options.

Bank The Blue Initiative

To address these gaps, Varchetto co-founded Bank The Blue in 2020. The nonprofit connects officers with independent, licensed mental health professionals who have experience working with law enforcement.

Key elements include:

  • Direct access to third-party clinicians
  • Free mental health services for officers
  • Training programs for departments on early warning signs
  • Outreach led by retired officers

Since its launch, the organization has supported over 100 officers across Illinois, with continued growth in demand.

Blue Star Security Perspective

Blue Star Security is staffed exclusively by state-certified active-duty and retired law enforcement professionals. This operational background informs the company’s understanding of both security environments and the broader wellness challenges faced by officers.

That perspective reinforces a core belief: effective public safety work depends on both operational readiness and officer well-being.

The Journal & Topics feature highlights an ongoing issue in law enforcement: ensuring timely, accessible mental health support for officers facing sustained or acute stress.

Through Bank The Blue and related initiatives, Varchetto and his colleagues continue working to improve access to care and reduce barriers within the profession.
